General information of Jimei Navigation College
The Navigation College of Jimei University was originally developed from Jimei Navigation School, which was founded in 1920 by Chen Jiageng, the patriotic leader of overseas Chinese. In 1989, Jimei Navigation School was upgraded to Jimei Navigation College (JNC) with the approval of National Education Committee, and in October, 1994 was incorporated in Jimei University. Over the past 80 years of management, JNC has called for Jiageng Spirit, upheld Honesty and Perseverance School Motto and has been hailed as the cradle of navigator owing to its influential distinction both at home and in Southeast Asia.
Today JNC boasts 4 programs, including Navigation Technology, Transport and Communication (International Shipping Management), Logistics and Law (Maritime Law), of which Navigation Technology and Transportation are 2 undergraduate programs unique in Fujian Province, which reflects the prominent navigation-based characteristics and tenet of the management of JNC. The College has given top priority to the development of double-ability type teaching staff in that by both unceasing recruit and forward-looking cultivation, the academic degrees and onboard working capabilities have been greatly improved and thus has formed a well-formed teaching staff with teamwork spirit and creativity ability. The College has devoted itself to accumulating and enriching undergraduate education experience, leading to the rapid improvement of teaching and administration.
The specialty of Navigation Technology, which can be traced back to 1920, aims at cultivating senior deck officers, including ocean shipping seafarers. In 1989, the specialty was promoted to a level for undergraduate and recruited undergraduates in 1990 and was authorized to offer the bachelor degree in engineering in 1994. Since its running, this specialty has cultivated over 21500 graduates, with 798 students in college now. The graduates with this specialty are famous for their devotion, diligence, perseverance, fortitude, pertinacity and adaptation and have received the praise of the shipping enterprises both at home and abroad.
The specialty of Transport and Communication, based on the specialty of International Shipping Management of 1994, was proposed in 1996 and was granted the permission to enroll new students in 1997. This specialty, with the support of the rich experience accumulated in the management of Navigation Technology, puts special stress on international shipping management and devotes itself to cultivating personnel required by the shipping market. Since its running, the Transport and Communication specialty has cultivated over 950 graduates, among whom 330 are undergraduates. Currently there are 432 undergraduates with this specialty.
Over the years, JNC has adhered to its tenet of serving shipping enterprises and has gradually enlarged the scale according to the requirements of the shipping market. In 2004, the specialties of Logistics and Law for undergraduate were proposed and approved in 2005 by the Committee of Education of Fujian province to enroll new students.
JNC consists of 5 instruction & research offices of navigation, seamanship, vessel management, international shipping management and logistics as well as three comprehensive laboratories of navigational apparatus, communication & navigation and aquatic training base. The College has a teaching staff of 101, among whom 56 full-time teachers, 29 research staff and 10 full-time administration staff. Among the full-time teachers, there are 10 professors, 15 associate professors and among the research staff, there are 9 senior technicians.
JNC is equipped with a marine radar simulator, a ship maneuvering simulator, a GMDSS simulator and an aquatic training base. The College owns laboratories covering an area of 6000 square meters and experimental assets totaling 18 million RMB. Through the amalgamation of the university enterprises, the College has established a well-operated marine training base with 2 training ships of the 10,000 DWT class.
JNC is authorized to award the Master’s degree in communication information engineering & control. The Maritime Technology Institution, approved by Fujian Education Committee in 1995, is now a jointly-owned entity in which are carried out such researches as vessel intelligence, marine communication management, display and control, and especially those concerning the application basis and development of navigation and harbor simulation engineering, and in addition, those about shipping management and regulation, logistics and technology, shipping and economic & trade connections between Taiwan and the mainland, including national social science fund research projects and Fujian natural science fund research projects. |
