What's wrong with homework?

Now, I have heard stories of children spending hour upon hour every night working on homework. I will agree completely that hours of homework, consistently assigned, is excessive. However, I cannot bring myself to believe that any homework whatsoever is bad, even at the elementary school level.

I will admit that at the elementary level, I doubt that getting rid of homework completely would have too terrible of an adverse affect. However, at the middle and high school levels, I believe that homework is an absolute necessity.

Looking back a few years to my own high school career, I find math works as a good example. The teacher spent the class period going over key concepts and basics. She then answered questions that the class had about those concepts, and then she showed us how to use them in solving a problem. She then answered more questions, and asked us to do a problem or two ourselves. She was available to help if we got stuck.

This was good. However, this was nowhere near enough practice for most of us to actually understand the material. Math, at least for most people, cannot be learned by having it explained. It must be practiced. This has to happen at home, or else there would be no time in school to have the explanation! (Which is also required, of course; otherwise there would be nothing to practice.)
